The View from Mary's Farm by Edie Clark

Growing up in a household where Yankee was always on our coffee table, I was a fan of Edie Clark’s years before I came to work here. So it was surreal to find myself strolling with her cherished dog, Harriet, at the New Hampshire homestead that Edie made famous in her column “Mary’s Farm.”

Aside from a brief stint as Edie’s volunteer dog walker, I didn’t know her well personally. But like so many who have loved her writing, I thought of her as a close friend—someone I knew and was grateful to have in my life.

Though she passed in 2024, I feel Edie’s presence through her books, many of which are collections of her Yankee writing, such as The View from Mary’s Farm and As Simple as That. When I gift these titles to fellow fans or introduce them to new readers, I think of what former Yankee editor Mel Allen wrote in a tribute to his late friend:

“A writer leaves her life on the page, which we can visit whenever we wish, as often as we desire. Edie lives on through her words, and she has left us hundreds of thousands of them. To say that she will be missed is an understatement. To say her work will endure long into the future is not.” —Jenn Johnson, Yankee senior managing editor

Edie Clark’s clear-eyed and lyrical essays in The View from Mary's Farm capture the essence of New England’s weather, seasons, landscape, and its wonderfully independent-minded people. In the tradition of Frost, Thoreau, and Dickinson, Clark demonstrates how the simple and profound joys of living close to nature can infuse life with grace, meaning, and beauty.

Nice, but not as nice as I'd hoped and the shoulders are too tight
Color: A-black, Size: Large
This is nice, but not as nice as it looked in the pictures. Still very good value for the price. It's a medium-heavy weight Q-zip that looks good, but the pics online were much nicer looking. It's comfortable and warm, but just ok overall. I like that the collar is on the taller side assuming I would wear it golfing in cooler weather, but the pockets are kind of shallow. It fits well overall, but the dealbreaker for me is that the shoulders are tight with a Large size. I could wear this out casually, but I don't think I could swing a golf club. I am 5'10" and "husky" in my old age and my shoulders are probably on the broader side, but the rest fits well so I was surprised how snug the shoulders were.

Nice Fit
Color: Black, White, Light Gray, Size: 3X-Large
I picked this up looking for something simple but clean, and it delivered. The fit is comfortable, the material feels solid, and it looks good without needing much effort. It’s one of those pieces you can throw on and still look put together.
